Stories that hit the News Stands July 2013

heatwave temps map july 2013Well we’ve passed the halfway mark of 2013 and the heatwave lunacy at News stands continues…July it is… and it will be one we won’t forget in a very long time… ah yes… the summer… where we drank triple…saw double and acted single… it’s all been going on! From Longitude to Latitude the stars they came and they conquered Irish festival audiences in their droves. As did Buble and Springsteen. There was a new baby on the block who created a worldwide whirlwind and kept camera crews on their toes for 9 days – the last 24 hours is only the tip of the iceberg. Nevertheless…

big and all as the royal baby story is… it didn’t even come close to the biggest story to hit Ireland in decades… Three consecutive weeks of wall to wall sunshine… and the burning question is why? well we’ll tell you. We’ve a perfectly simple scientific answer to that question. The entire island of Ireland simply moved South for a few weeks – take a look at the map and see for yourselves. Wouldn’t it be great if we could stay there. Don’t be ridiculous, we’ll have to be back to normal before School term begins! Rumour has it – and you know how we love our rumours here at Orchid Towers… we’re also heading for an Indian Summer…. yay!

BABY MONARCH MIGHT NOT BE KING FOR ANOTHER 70 YEARS – JUST LOOK AT CHARLES – STILL WAITING IN THE WINGS…. The Royal Mail. Up until now posting details about new royal babies was only ever announced on this easel … however for the first time ever… The Monarchy sent out emails to the press…. one believes one has gone digital – me thinks.

NAMING BABY! The ‘Prince of Cambridge’ arrived in style on a full moon during a thunderstorm at 4.24pm 22nd July, weighing 8lbs 6 ounces. And so far going to press this evening, there was still no news on what the future King of England will be named. The hotly tipped names so far include; Albert, Philip, Arthur, George, Louis, Alexander, Middleton, Henry, William, Charles, Alfred… we’re doubtful that modern names such as Steven, David, or Mark will make the grade however we are pretty sure that the outside favourite at 500/1 ‘Hashtag’ can definitely be ruled out. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have no doubt been thinking long and hard about names….. it has been said that if the baby had been a girl that they would have called her Diana…. now that would have been a story… Diana would be very proud.

JULY’S WOMAN OF THE MONTH – JULIA ROBERTS She has just shot her 44th movie; August: Osage County is an upcoming 2013 comedy drama film based on Tracy Letts’ play of the same name. The film is directed by John Wells, and produced by George Clooney, Jean Doumanian, Grant Heslov, Steve Traxler and Harvey Weinstein. Its ensemble cast is led by Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts. The film was slated to be released on November 8, 2013, it is now due to be released on December 25, 2013. A right little Christmas cracker! Julia with Albert Finny Julia Fiona Roberts (born October 28, 1967) became a Hollywood star after headlining the romantic comedy Pretty Woman (1990), which grossed $464 million worldwide. After receiving Golden Globe Awards and Academy Award nominations for Steel Magnolias (1989) and Pretty Woman, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Erin Brockovich (2000). Her films Mystic Pizza(1988), The Pelican Brief (1993), My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997), Notting Hill (1999),Runaway Bride (1999), Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), Valentine’s Day (2010), Eat Pray Love (2010), and Mirror Mirror (2012) have collectively brought box office receipts of over $2.6 billion, making her one of the most successful actresses in terms of box office receipts. Roberts has become one of the highest-paid actresses in the world, topping The Hollywood Reporter’s annual “power list” of top-earning female stars from 2005 to 2006. Her fee for 1990’s Pretty Woman was $300,000; in 2003, she was paid an unprecedented $25 million for her role in Mona Lisa Smile (2003). The team here at Orchid Jewels is fully agreed on one thing – our favourite Julia Roberts movie is Erin Brockovich – for which she won an oscar.

SPEAKING OF ROYALTY – LADY CHERYL TURNS 30 VEGAS STYLE WITH A 58K PARTY AND A TITLE FROM SIMON

The Girls Aloud singer was joined by bandmates Kimberley Walsh (31) and Nicola Roberts (27) in the City of Sin. Nadine Coyle and Sarah Harding were nowhere to be seen. Also there was her dancer boyfriend Tre Holloway. Cheryl headed to Hakkasan night club and stayed until 3.45am on Sunday morning. Cheryl was spotted enjoying a cheeky cigarette while waving her hands on the dance floor earlier on in the night. She chatted and laughed with her friends and seemed to be having the time of her life.

The star looked chic in a sequined mesh mini dress and white stiletto courts. Simon made up for his absence from the celebrations with a very special and unusual gift – a land deed, which officially makes her Lady Cheryl Cole! We also think that our Cheryl has a wee look of Julia Roberts?
Who would have thunk it? Lady Cheryl Cole What a lovely gift from Simon…we’re still convinced he’s madly in love with the girl!

AS DUSTIN HOFFMAN SPILLS THE BEANS – HE GOES UP IN OUR ESTIMATION.  Dustin Hoffman Broke down crying during a recent interview about the making of Tootsie…   “Something That Every Woman Sadly Already Experienced” Back in the day, for those of you younger folk, Dustin Hoffman made a movie called “Tootsie.” It was a hilarious and touching movie about an actor who can’t get a gig, decides to become a woman to see if it helps, and scores a role on a soap opera. Hilarity ensued. But it was more than just a comedy. Dustin Hoffman on TOOTSIE and his character Dorothy Michael,s expressed his sadness at how he has often overlooked ‘plain’ looking woman he had encountered in his life until he actually played Dorothy.

YOU COULDN’T WRITE IT – SEPARATED TWINS REUNITED 41 YEARS LATER VIA A CHANCE STREET ENCOUNTER! Separated as babies in 1972 due to family poverty, the brothers are together again after a chance encounter in a crowded city. A friend of Chengdu resident Zeng Yong, 41, said he had met a man in the city of Neijiang, 200km away, whom he claimed was identical to Mr Zeng. Mr Zeng, a hotelier, travelled to Neijiang, home to close to four million people, to see the man for himself. Amazingly, on meeting Liu Yonggang, a junior manager at the city’s bus company, he realised he was his long-lost twin brother. Due to their parents’ poverty, the pair had been put up for adoption in 1972 when only a few months old. They were taken by different families. Since being reunited, the brothers have tracked down their estranged 74-year-old mother. Wonderful story. Hanky anyone?

UNLIKELY ‘PET COUPLE’ STUNS VET NURSE Orphaned kitten abandoned in church finds unlikely surrogate mum in grumpy bulldog. This pair would usually fight like cat and dog. But orphaned kitten Tigger has found an unlikely surrogate mum in Harley the bulldog. The two year-old is keeping a close eye on her tiny ginger charge – and has even started producing milk to feed him. Their unlikely bond developed when Tigger – who is just two weeks old – was found alone and abandoned in a church. He was handed in to Arvonia Vets in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, where trainee nurse Clare Evans fell for him straight away.

GONE TOO SOON – WE BID A SAD FAREWELL TO;

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Charlotte Brosnan at only 41 she’s left two young teenagers and a loving husband behind. Her grief stricken father Pierce is is said to be devastated as she lost her battle to the same ovarian cancer which took her own mum Cassandra 20 years ago. RIP

Mel Smith also passed on this month, he suffered a heart attack in his sleep at home. The comic genius had been quite ill for sometime. By all accounts Mel was an utter gentleman and gave many writers, actors and comedians their first break through his hugely successful Television production company – Talkback! Including our own Fr Ted team.

TIME FOR A LITTLE PADDY WHACKERY –  WHEN DRIVING IN DUBLIN – MIND THE TRAMS – SERIOUSLY!

So it’s not a great idea to try to take a left where it says no entry – right? and best to keep an eye out for the trams coming from the right… right? if car takes on tram… tram will win! End of. Finally, as the weather has been so fantastic I thought I’d pop down to the local gym for a quick tone up (ahem)… so I asked the gym instructor “Can you teach me to do the splits?” “Sure,” he said “of course I can, how flexible are you? I said “I can’t make Tuesdays”. While I’m at it… I said to my Doc’ “I can’t stop singing green grass of home” He said, “That sounds like Tom Jones Syndrome”. “Is that common?” I asked. “It’s not unusual” he replied. And on that note…. may the sun continue to shine, with all that vitamin D it feels good to smile.

Don’t forget to check out our eStore while you’re here.  Treat yourself! Have a lovely summer

See you at the end of August

best wishes Martia & Team
