Looking back over some of the top stories to hit the News Stands across September there were a few pleasant surprises – not least – just when we thought summer was over we were actually in for a treat. We closed last month’s blog with the hope that we may be blessed with an Indian Summer here in Ireland and low and behold, we’ve been blessed. There’s nothing more disheartening than rolling into September watching the days get shorter as trees turn a soft red gold just before they fall. Whoo hoo stop the lights, mother nature kicked in over the past few days and everyone raced to the beaches, dusted off the BBQ’s, grabbed the sunscreen and just went postal. Tis’ a perfect end to the start of Autumn as we get a little respite from the winter ahead.
Of course it being Ireland the weather will always make top story…. sunshine is such a rare occurrence – it is little wonder we’re all half mad. Other stories to hit the headlines; Bono turned wedding singer for a one night stand? in a totally unrelated story Adam Clayton finally jumped the broom with his Brazilian bird, we drop into Gwyneth Paltrow’s garden party, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters came to Dublin and built a wall. Over 100,000 thousand people queued endlessly for hours along the quays in Dublin waiting for aeroplanes to fly over them during Flight Fest, the only thing we found a little bizarre is that you can do that on any day in Dublin Airport? Musicians Christy Moore and Mike Scott lambast Diageo for sinister marketing ploy – for encouraging binge drinking but also the fact that only multi millionaire superstars actually get paid on Arfurs Days, the lowly upcoming Irish bands work for free – sorry for the honour? Speaking of car crash actions; There was a 100 vehicle pileup in Kent in the UK and no one was seriously hurt? We said farewell to Sir David Frost, and Majella O’Donnell raised 500,000 for The Irish Cancer Society in just one night… more on those stories later… but first…

ELLEN DE GENEROUS! (September 2003-2013)
Ellen’s TV show first hit our screens on the 8th of September 2003, celebrating 10 years of her TV show Ellen DeGeneres; we have introduced a new slot to our monthly blog where we will share some of the comedian’s most hilarious and touching clips. Ellen has most certainly taken the mantle from Oprah as one of Television’s biggest Daytime Talk Show hosts. Her TV hit show is not only hugely entertaining, but also so very funny and at times breathtakingly heart-rending. Most importantly the generosity of this funny girl knows no bounds, her eye for new talent is inspirational …. sit up and take note Mr Cowell… this is how it’s done!
One of my favourite Ellen tweets – this she tweeted just before the show returned for season 11 earlier this month. We’ll have lots more from Ellen and the team next month.
UK SKYSCRAPER WARPING CARS IN HEATWAVE
Anticipation is building as construction of London’s “Walkie Talkie” skyscraper continues, but there’s one problem already towering over its developers: the structure may be melting cars. Seriously. The commercial skyscraper at 20 Fenchurch Street in the city’s financial district, which earned its nickname for its distinct shape, has been blamed for reflecting enough sunlight to warp the metal on parked cars, the BBC reports. A man said he had parked his Jaguar on a nearby street and after he returned two hours later, noticed damage to the vehicle’s mirror, panels and Jaguar badge. He also told the BBC that he found a note from the construction company on the windshield that said, “Your car’s buckled, could you give us a call?” Ouch. CHRISTY MOORE JOINS TWITTER TO BLAST ‘ARFURS’ ALCOHOLIDAY
CHRISTY MOORE HAS joined Twitter, and he used his first tweet to announce the release of his next single, Arthur’s Day.
Folk legend Christy Moore has blasted Arthur’s Day in a new song dubbing it an ‘Alcoholiday’. The Kildare singer is releasing his new festival attack track – Arthur’s Day – on the same day as the celebration next Thursday. In the song the 68-year-old doesn’t hold back, claiming the Guinness-sponsored event is a “happy clappy advertising scheme” by Diageo to “flog their alcohol.” Fiery Christy – who joined Twitter to announce the song – also tells in the track that the “A&E will be like a drunk tank in the firing line while Diageo goes AWOL at closing time.” Christy’s attack on Arthur’s Day comes from his new album Where I Come From which is out on November 1 and was backed by Des Bishop who told fans it is “worth a listen.” The Black Is The Colour star has previously told fans of his annoyance with the Guinness-themed day at live concerts, at which he has performed the song. Christy has joined Gabriel Byrne, 62, in blasting Arthurs Day – after the Hollywood star previously claimed it was simply a way of encouraging people to get “drunk”.

SHEPPEY 100 CAR PILE UP IN FOGGY KENT
When the fog finally lifted it revealed a trail of carnage that stretched for almost 500 yards. More than 100 cars were involved in a massive ten-minute pile-up after visibility fell to just a few feet during rush hour yesterday morning. Eight people were seriously injured and 200 walking wounded needed treatment at the scene. Police said it was ‘truly miraculous’ that nobody died in the biggest ever accident caused by fog on British roads. Motorists described their ‘blind terror’ in the seemingly endless succession of screeching tyres, crunching metal and smashing glass as cars, lorries and vans ploughed into each other and crumpled like concertinas. Martin Stammers, 45, from Minster on the Isle of Sheppey, said: ‘It was horrific. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. ‘It was so foggy you couldn’t even see the tail lights of the car in front of you – it was like you were driving in a blanket. ‘I was very, very lucky. As I came to the top of the hill, there were about five cars already smashed up, one across my carriageway. ‘I had to hit my brakes hard as well, I just had enough space to get through. ‘From then on, all you could hear was the screeching of car tyres and the thudding, which was endless. You could hear the lorries thudding into cars, you could hear glass breaking, there was nothing we could do. ‘It was utter carnage. It must have gone on for about ten minutes. ‘Even after the police turned up, you heard further down the bridge – a quarter of a mile, half a mile away – cars still going into the back of each other.’ See more Pics Here at the Daily Mail
See you in October
